Why I built this
My name is Austin. I live in San Jose, California, where I lead the AI department at a healthcare technology company. I'm also an elder, small group leader, occasional preacher, and mediocre worship team guitarist at my church.
I built Sermonic because the sermon writing tools I found were either light on features or surprisingly expensive — and I knew I could build something better. Google Docs doesn't match the actual flow of sermon prep. I also struggled with staying on point; I'd start with a clear goal and wander down rabbit trails that didn't serve the sermon.
As someone who works in technology, I saw people falling into the trap of letting ChatGPT write things for them — not intentionally, but because it will offer by default. I wanted to build something with clear guardrails: a tool that makes research faster and richer without crossing the line into generating your sermon.
How Sermonic uses AI
Sermonic includes optional AI features, and every one of them is built around a core conviction: sermons should not be written by AI.
Sermonic will never generate sermon text for you. What it will do is act as a research partner and sounding board — performing initial research, providing a chat interface oriented towards your style and goals, and giving feedback on your draft when you ask for it.
Think of it less like a ghostwriter and more like a well-read colleague who's always available to talk through your sermon with you. And if you'd rather not use the AI features at all, everything else works just fine without them.
FAQ
Questions
Why the name Sermonic?
A few friends and I have a running joke about the "sermonic we" — when pastors say "we" in a sermon but really mean "you." As in, "We need to change our hearts!" I thought it was funny, so that's the name. I reserve the right to change it.
Do I have to use the AI features?
Nope. They're completely optional. The workspace stands on its own as a focused sermon writing environment.
What if I have a feature idea?
Email me at adj6193@gmail.com. I genuinely want to hear your ideas and allow them to guide future development of Sermonic.
Will this ever be a paid service?
If the app gains traction, yes — there are real costs involved in running it, including Bible translation licenses, AI usage, and cloud infrastructure. My goal is to keep it significantly more affordable than what's currently out there. During the beta, it's completely free.
I have another question!
